Tips for Keeping Valuables Safe in Storage

A storage unit can be a great place to keep valuable items safe, whether those are items with sentimental value like family heirlooms or items of financial value like a collection of rare coins. Storage units offer features like 24/7 surveillance, controlled access and climate control, all of which contribute to the safety of your valuable items while they are in storage. However, there are certain steps that can be taken when storing items in a storage unit to ensure that the stored items are kept safe. In today’s blog we will be looking at some helpful tips for keeping valuables safe while they are in storage.

Invest in Good Containers

The first step for keeping valuables safe is to ensure that they are in a good container. Cardboard boxes are easily crushed when items are stacked on top of them and are vulnerable to external threats like moisture and mold. Instead invest in sturdy plastic containers or lock boxes that can stand up to weight and punishment.

Use Smart Placement

Where you place your valuables in your storage unit can also have an effect on how safe they are. Be sure to position valuables near the back of the unit and place less valuable items in front of or on top of the valuable items so that they are less visible. You should also be sure that the boxes that you have stored your valuables in aren’t at risk of being crushed by heavier items.

Pack for Protection

Many valuable items are fragile and are at risk of being damaged if packed incorrectly. Make use of packing materials like tissue paper, bubble wrap or packing peanuts in order to protect them. You should also be sure to wrap all valuable items individually for maximum protection.

Keep an Inventory

While you may not want to externally label valuables in case the security of your storage unit is compromised you should still keep an accurate inventory of items in your storage unit so you don’t lose track of them. Consider using a numbering system for your boxes rather than writing what items are in each box if you want to hide what is in each individual container.
