Storing Photography Equipment: Tips for Protection

Photography can be an expensive hobby that involves a lot of special equipment to produce the best photos possible. Poor storage of camera equipment can lead to a variety of problems such as scratched lenses, fungus, internal debris or battery leaks. So here are some tips on how to best store and protect your Photography equipment.

Clean your equipment before you store it

One of the best tips for storing photography equipment and ensuring that it comes out in good condition is to clean all of your gear before you put it into storage. For Photography Equipment this means wiping down everything with a microfiber cloth to remove dust and debris and cleaning the lenses with a lens cleaning solution and a proper lens cloth.

Use Protective Wraps

Because most photography equipment is delicate you may want to invest in protective wraps like bubble wrap to ensure that your equipment is protected and cushioned from accidental physical impacts. Be sure to avoid using storage padding like newspapers or cloth as it can damage your photography equipment.

Store your Lenses Vertically

Storing your lenses vertically, with the front of the lens facing upward, reduces the risk of dust and moisture accumulating on the lenses components and reduces overall strain on important internal components.

Use Silica Gel to Control Moisture

You can control the humidity in your storage areas by using silica gel packets in your storage cases. These packets will absorb excess moisture and help keep things dry, preventing the growth of fungus.

Remove any Batteries and Memory Cards prior to storage

Remove the batteries from any photography equipment before you put it into storage. In some cases, batteries can leak and lead to irreparable damage to your equipment. Batteries should be stored separately in a cool, dry place to maintain their integrity. While chances are rare that your memory cards will be damaged during storage it is a good idea to store them separately in case something happens.

Invest in a Specialized Storage Cabinet

If you have a serious collection of photography equipment you may want to consider investing in a specialized storage cabinet for your gear. Many of these cabinets come packaged with humidity controls so you can best protect your equipment.

Regularly Check on your Gear

A good way to make sure that nothing is going wrong with your equipment storage is to regularly check on it, unpacking all of your gear and making sure that it hasn’t been contaminated with dust or moisture. Early detection of these issues ensures that they can be addressed in a timely manner to avoid permanent damage to your equipment.

Avoid Temperature Extremes

Avoid storing your photography equipment in environments that are prone to temperature extremes, either heat or cold. These kinds of environments can cause the components in your equipment to expand and contract at different rates, possibly leading to permanent damage.

Store Accessories Separately

Make sure that you store your smaller accessories like chargers and cables separately from the more sensitive equipment. Poorly stored accessories can lead to damage for both the equipment and the accessories.
