5 Rules for Smart Packing – Maximizing Space in a Mini Storage Unit
Self-Storage units are available in all manner of sizes, from room sized units to small lockers. No matter the size of unit you have chosen your space is ultimately limited so it is important to consider how you are packing your unit in order to make the best use of the space. In today’s blog we will be providing you with five rules for maximizing space in a mini storage unit.
Use Uniform, Quality Boxes
One of the most important things you can do when organizing your storage unit is to make use of quality boxes of uniform design and size. Quality boxes ensure that the items you store within them are kept safe and protected while being stored and uniform sizes ensure that you will be able to fit as many of them within your storage space as possible. Poor quality boxes pose the risk of collapsing, crushing items inside and destabilizing your storage unit. Non uniform design means that the boxes won’t fit well together and they will leave a lot of space unused.
Store Large, Heavy Items on the Bottom
Be sure to store any items that are large, heavy, bulky or big on the bottom of your storage unit. By doing this you can ensure a stable foundation for your storage unit as well as protecting other smaller items from being crushed by the large, heavy items. If you have lighter large items or large items that you will need to access regularly consider storing them against the walls of the unit, you won’t want to move everything stored on top of them whenever you want to access them.
Make use of Vertical Space
Packing vertically is one of the best ways to maximize space use within your storage unit. It is also important to consider the weight and fragility of the items you are storing as you will want to ensure that heavy items or boxes are on the bottom with lighter items on the top. This ensures that you aren’t putting too much weight on the load bearing boxes or items on the bottom as well as ensuring that you aren’t creating a safety risk by storing heavy items where they might fall on you.
Disassemble Furniture
While this may seem like an extra step furniture, when it is fully assembled, can take up a lot of unnecessary space. For example, when fully assembled tables are big and awkward with their legs making them difficult to work around. When disassembled a table has a much smaller footprint allowing you to easily store items on top of it or lean it against a wall. Items like dressers, which cannot really be disassembled, can help maximize storage space if you make use of the drawers to store smaller items.
Store items you need the most near the front
If you have items that you plan to make regular use of you should be sure to store these as close to the front of your storage unit and as close to the top of your stored items as possible. This will enable you to access the items without needing to unpack your storage unit.
